Aeration

 

Oxygenating your water is key to maintaining health and balance within your aquatic ecosystem. 

Not only will aeration help reduce your excess nutrient load and improve the health of your fish and aquatic plants, it also stimulates beneficial bacteria. This is important because the vast majority of good bacteria (including those within our biological treatments) are aerobic, meaning that without adequate oxygen within their environment, they can’t thrive and out-compete far less desirable inhabitants such as algae, sludge, aquatic weed and anaerobic bacteria (the smelly, and sometimes dangerous ones).

Ideally most smaller water bodies (such as ponds and smaller dams) will be aerated at the rate of their volume every one to two hours. There is slightly more time allowed for larger water bodies such as lakes and larger dams, but the requirement for aeration remains.

An remember, when it comes to dissolved oxygen, it’s always the more, the better.
